# Dentist burnout: what the research shows so far

One systematic review pooled 37 studies and put dentist burnout prevalence at 13%, with wide variation between studies. Emotional exhaustion was the most common dimension. The review's authors warn that the studies differ a lot and that none met every quality criterion. The ADA reports that more than 80% of dentists feel major stress.

Search results for dentist burnout mix headlines, surveys and opinion. This post sticks to peer-reviewed reviews on PubMed and PMC, plus the American Dental Association (ADA) wellness pages, all opened on October 26, 2026. It is a summary of research, not medical or mental health advice. Anyone in distress should contact a licensed professional or call or text 988.

## What is burnout, in research terms?

Researchers usually measure [dental burnout](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-burnout) with the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a 22-item questionnaire. The 2024 review describes three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. It also notes that the World Health Organization classified burnout as a condition only starting in 2019 and ties it to occupational contexts.

The three dimensions matter because they give different numbers. A study can report high emotional exhaustion without calling the person “burned out” overall.

## What is the burnout rate for dentists?

The most cited pooled estimate is 13%. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis searched six databases and included 37 articles, with 31 in the quantitative synthesis. Only studies using the Maslach inventory counted.

Result in the 2022 meta-analysis

Pooled figure

Overall burnout prevalence

13% (95% CI 0.6% to 21%)

Emotional exhaustion subscale

28%

Depersonalization subscale

18%

Reduced personal accomplishment subscale

10%

High emotional exhaustion

25%

High depersonalization

18%

Low personal accomplishment

32%

The authors concluded that burnout prevalence was considerable, mainly in emotional exhaustion. They also reported very high heterogeneity for several results, with an I-squared of 97% for the overall figure. That means studies disagreed widely. No study met all criteria of the Joanna Briggs Institute quality checklist.

Read the 13% as a pooled midpoint. It is not a rate for any one country, state or practice. This is why a single “burnout rate for dentists” can look different from source to source.

## What did the 2024 review add?

A 2024 systematic review in Healthcare looked at dental professionals before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. It searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for 2014 to April 2024. It found high levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment, with large variation tied to workplace factors, professional relationships and pandemic stress.

It also found differences by education level and age. The authors argued that professional relationships and workplace dynamics could play a major role in prevention.

This review pooled studies from many countries. Nothing in it is specific to Missouri.

## What does the ADA report about stress?

The ADA’s mental health page says more than 80% of dentists report “major” stress in their careers. That is a stress figure, not a burnout rate, and the page does not give a method on the page itself. Do not mix the two numbers.

The ADA points dentists to the Well-Being Index, which it describes as a confidential tool invented by the Mayo Clinic, and to a directory of state well-being programs. The [wellness resources post](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/blog/wellness-resources-for-dentists) lists them.

## Why does burnout matter to a practice?

The 2022 meta-analysis opens by saying burnout has negative consequences for the dentist’s health and performance during work. The 2024 review lists the impact of burnout on dental practices as one of its inclusion topics. Neither source gives a dollar cost, so this post does not give one.

For an owner, the practical link runs through people. A stressed team member may leave, and [staff turnover](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/staff-turnover) has its own costs. The sources opened here do not measure that link directly.

## How should you read a prevalence number?

Four terms appear in almost every burnout paper. Knowing them helps when you read a headline figure.

Term

Plain meaning

Prevalence

The share of people in a group who meet a stated definition

Confidence interval

The range in which the true value likely falls; a wide range means low certainty

Heterogeneity (I-squared)

How much studies disagree; values near 100% mean they disagree a lot

Cutoff

The score at which a study says a person has burnout; studies choose different cutoffs

## What are the limits of this research?

Several limits apply to nearly every study in this field.

- Most studies are surveys. They show links, not causes.
- Cutoffs for “burnout” differ between studies.
- Samples come from many countries and health systems.
- Pandemic timing shifted results in some studies.
- Self-selected respondents may skew results either way.

For practice owners, these limits mean that a benchmark from a review should start a conversation, not end one. The guide on [dental leadership](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/guides/dental-leadership) covers team climate and owner leadership, and the post on [dental team burnout](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/blog/dental-team-burnout) covers assistants and hygienists. Related glossary terms include [practice culture](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/practice-culture) and [employee retention](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/employee-retention).

## What questions can a practice leader ask?

Research cannot diagnose a practice. It can suggest topics for an honest team conversation. These are prompts, not advice.

- How heavy is the workload on each role, and how is it measured?
- How do doctors and team members give each other feedback?
- Who can raise a concern, and what happens next?
- Does the team know where to find the wellness resources the ADA and the Dental Board list?

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the burnout rate for dentists?

One 2022 meta-analysis pooled 31 studies and found 13% overall, with a confidence interval from 0.6% to 21%. High emotional exhaustion appeared in 25% of dentists. The authors note high variation between studies, so no single rate fits every group.

### How is burnout measured in these studies?

The review counted only studies that used the Maslach Burnout Inventory. It scores emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. A person scores on each dimension, and studies set their own cutoffs for calling it burnout.

### Does the research prove what causes burnout in dentistry?

No. Most studies are surveys, which show links, not causes. A 2024 systematic review found workplace factors and professional relationships mattered, but the studies it covered varied by country, role and pandemic timing.
