How much do dental practice owners make? What data exists

No source reports a single figure for what dental practice owners make. ADA Health Policy Institute data shows owner general dentists averaged about $217,781 in 2024, in constant 2024 dollars, and non-owners about $160,891. BLS wage tables leave out self-employed owners.

Owner income is the hardest dentist pay figure to find. The main federal wage survey leaves out self-employed workers. The most useful public source is the ADA Health Policy Institute (HPI) Survey of Dental Practice. This post shows what that survey reports, what it does not report and how to read the numbers.

How much do dental practice owners make?

No source gives one figure for every owner. The HPI data comes closest. In its November 2025 report, HPI shows inflation-adjusted average income for owner general practitioner (GP) dentists of about $217,781 in 2024, against about $160,891 for non-owner GPs. Both are in constant 2024 dollars.

HPI also reports that the average income for all GP dentists was $215,320 in 2025. That number mixes owners and non-owners, so do not read it as an owner figure.

Item (ADA HPI, GP dentists) Owners Non-owners
Average income, 2024, constant 2024 dollars about $217,781 about $160,891
Average weekly hours, 2024 37.0 31.8

The report states that owner dentists work an average of 5 hours more per week than employee or associate dentists. It also says the income gap between the two groups is shrinking over time.

What is the gap over time?

The income gap between owners and non-owners has narrowed since 2010. HPI’s chart shows owner GPs averaging about $283,000 in 2010 and about $217,781 in 2024. Non-owner GPs moved from about $173,000 to about $160,891 over the same period. All values are in constant 2024 dollars.

The comparable fall was much larger for owners than for non-owners. HPI ties recent declines to growing practice expenses and falling revenue. In the pooled years 2020 to 2024, its figures show revenue per dentist of $698,436 and expenses per dentist of $482,343.

Why is owner income hard to measure?

Owner income can mix two things: pay for the owner’s own clinical work and profit from the business. The sources used here do not split the two.

The main federal wage survey does not help here. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says its wage data do not include self-employed workers. About 12 percent of dentist jobs nationally are self-employed, per the BLS handbook. For BLS numbers, see how much a dentist makes.

The glossary entries for owner compensation and profit margin explain the terms.

How common is ownership?

Ownership is common but declining. HPI reports that 73 percent of dentists were practice owners in 2023, down from 85 percent in 2005. It also reports that the share of dentists affiliated with a dental support organization (DSO) rose from 11.1 percent in 2021 to 16.1 percent in 2024.

That shift changes the sample behind any average. As more dentists work as employees, the owner group gets smaller and may differ from the owner group of 2010. The practice owner entry defines the role.

What costs and risks come with ownership?

Ownership brings costs and duties that employed dentists do not carry. The BLS handbook says dentists in private practice oversee administrative work such as bookkeeping and buying equipment and supplies. Those tasks take time and money. The HPI survey’s expenses per dentist show how large practice costs can be.

  • Overhead: rent, supplies, lab fees, staff and equipment.
  • Debt: loans taken to buy or build the practice.
  • Time: owners worked more hours in the HPI data.
  • Risk: income depends on the practice’s results.

The overhead entry and the post on overhead percentage explain the cost side. Valuation, taxes and loans are topics for a CPA, a lender or a broker.

What should a reader do with these numbers?

Treat them as context. They are national averages from a survey, not a forecast for one practice. They do not describe what any owner should expect. A buyer or seller should look at the real books of the real practice, with an adviser. The valuing a dental practice guide explains how value is estimated.

How much does the figure move from year to year?

The survey series is not smooth. The chart data in HPI’s report shows owner GPs at about $283,000 in 2010, about $243,000 in 2014, about $276,000 in 2017, about $228,000 in 2020, about $275,000 in 2021 and about $217,781 in 2024. All values are in constant 2024 dollars.

Year Owner GPs Non-owner GPs
2010 about $283,000 about $173,000
2014 about $243,000 about $171,000
2018 about $251,000 about $182,000
2020 about $228,000 about $153,000
2024 about $217,781 about $160,891

A reader should not read any single year as typical. A survey sample, the economy and practice costs all move the figure. For the same reason, one practice can sit far from the average in either direction.

What questions should an owner or buyer ask?

Averages do not replace a practice’s own records. These questions point to the records that matter.

  1. What does the practice collect in a year, and how much goes to expenses?
  2. How much pay does the owner take for clinical work, and how much is profit?
  3. What debt does the practice carry, and what are the payments?
  4. How does the owner’s net income compare with what an employed dentist would earn for the same hours?

An accountant can answer these from the books. The practice valuation entry shows how the same numbers feed a sale price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental practice owner make?

No single figure exists. In the ADA Survey of Dental Practice, owner general dentists averaged about $217,781 in 2024, in constant 2024 dollars. Owners also work more hours and carry business risk. The number is an average, not a promise.

Do owners earn more than associates?

On average, yes, in the ADA data. Owner general dentists averaged about $217,781 and non-owner general dentists about $160,891 in 2024. The ADA says the gap between the two groups has been shrinking over time.

Why is owner income hard to find?

The main federal wage survey leaves out self-employed workers, and owner income combines pay for clinical work with profit from the business. Few public sources split the two.
