CBCT

CBCT stands for cone beam computed tomography, a dental x-ray method that rotates around the patient and builds a three-dimensional image of the teeth and jaws.

CBCT uses a cone-shaped x-ray beam. The FDA says the CBCT systems used by dental professionals rotate around the patient and capture data with that beam. The data is used to build a three-dimensional image.

The FDA also notes that dental CBCT images give 3D information, not the 2D information of a conventional x-ray. Dentists use CBCT for tasks such as implant planning, endodontics and surgery planning.

CBCT uses ionizing radiation, so the FDA advises that it be used only when needed. It does not replace a basic digital radiography exam for every patient. CBCT data also supports guided implant surgery planning.
