# Dental benefits

Dental benefits are the coverage a plan provides for dental services, including what it pays, what the patient pays and what is limited or excluded.

Dental benefits describe what a plan will pay for. They often include covered services, a yearly maximum, deductibles, coinsurance and waiting periods. HealthCare.gov defines the allowed amount as the maximum amount a plan will pay for a covered health care service.

Benefits differ by plan, so two patients with the same dentist can owe different amounts. Offices check them before care. See [insurance verification](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/insurance-verification).

Benefits are not the same as treatment need. A plan may deny a service the dentist thinks is right, and the patient and dentist decide next steps. The patient's [explanation of benefits](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/explanation-of-benefits) shows what the plan paid.
