# Job description

A written statement of a role's main duties, responsibilities and reporting line, used for hiring, onboarding and reviewing the work of the person who holds the job.

A job description records what a role involves. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management defines a position description as a statement of the major duties, responsibilities and supervisory relationships of a position. It aims to document the main duties, not every possible task in a work day.

In a dental office, descriptions often exist for [dental assistants](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-assistant), hygienists, front desk staff and managers. They support hiring, [onboarding](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/onboarding) and each [performance review](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/performance-review). The ADA also publishes sample job descriptions for dental team roles.

Duties must stay within scope of practice limits for licensed roles. An attorney or HR adviser can review a description for legal fit. This entry is a general definition.
