Same-day crown

A same-day crown is a crown that is designed and milled in the dental office so the patient can receive it in a single visit.

A same-day crown uses chairside CAD/CAM technology. The team scans the prepared tooth, designs the crown on screen and mills it in the office. A 2026 review says chairside CAD/CAM technology has reshaped restorative dentistry by enabling single-visit indirect restorations.

The tooth is scanned with an intraoral scanner, so no putty impression is needed.

The approach needs equipment, software, materials and training. Not every case suits one visit, and some practices still send work to a lab. Owners often weigh the cost of a mill against the number of crowns they place. See technology return on investment.
