# Same-day crown

A same-day crown is a crown that is designed and milled in the dental office so the patient can receive it in a single visit.

A same-day crown uses chairside [CAD/CAM](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/cad-cam) technology. The team scans the prepared tooth, designs the crown on screen and mills it in the office. A 2026 review says chairside CAD/CAM technology has reshaped restorative dentistry by enabling single-visit indirect restorations.

The tooth is scanned with an [intraoral scanner](https://joncopeland.multisites.ai/glossary/intraoral-scanner), so no putty impression is needed.

The approach needs equipment, software, materials and training. Not every case suits one visit, and some practices still send work to a lab.
