# Technology return on investment

Technology return on investment compares what a dental technology costs, including training and upkeep, with the financial value it brings back to the practice.

Harvard Business School Online describes return on investment (ROI) as a metric used to denote how much profit has been generated from an investment that has been made. Its formula subtracts project cost from financial value, divides by project cost and multiplies by 100.

For dental technology, costs include equipment, software, training, supplies and downtime. Returns can include fees for new services, lab savings and time saved. Some benefits, such as patient comfort, are hard to count.

Buyers should use their own numbers, not a vendor's claims. A lender or CPA can check the math.
