Compliance and risk

Compliance checklist

A compliance checklist is a written list that a practice uses to confirm it meets required safety, privacy and other rules, and to track what is done.

A compliance checklist turns rules into tasks. The CDC publishes an Infection Prevention Checklist for Dental Settings. It starts with a basic expectation: the setting has appropriate infection prevention policies and practices, including training of dental health care personnel and adequate supplies.

A practice may keep separate lists for OSHA duties, HIPAA duties, infection control, emergency plans and state board rules. Each item should name a person, a due date and where proof is kept.

A checklist helps spot gaps. It does not replace advice from an attorney or compliance adviser. Rules change, so review the list at least once a year.
