Practice management

Gross production

Gross production is the total amount an office bills for treatment performed under its own fee schedule, before any adjustment for insurance contracts, discounts or write-offs.

Gross production is the largest production figure on a report. The ADA defines total production as the total amount the office will bill for a procedure, as set by its established fee schedule. Nothing has been subtracted yet. If a practice has a contract with a payer, the contract may allow only a lower amount, and that lower amount is called net production or adjusted production. The ADA notes that when total production equals billable production, the practice is likely not a participating provider in PPO or DMO plans. Gross production alone does not show what the practice will keep, so owners usually read it next to collections.
