KOL

KOL is the short form of key opinion leader, a term used by companies and meeting organizers for clinicians whose views carry weight with peers.

KOL stands for key opinion leader. You will see it in industry reports, sales plans and speaker lists.

A 2026 survey in PubMed Central describes medical science liaisons who facilitate scientific exchange with KOLs and health care professionals. This shows how companies use the term across health care, not only in dentistry.

The label itself does not prove a person's skill or independence. The federal Office of Inspector General says company-sponsored speaker programs carry fraud and abuse risks when payments are involved. Audiences should look for clear disclosure of any relationship with a company. A related role is the brand ambassador.
