Teledentistry

Teledentistry is the use of technology to give dental consultation, screening or follow-up at a distance, such as by video or by sharing images.

Teledentistry applies telehealth ideas to dental care. A 2026 paper describes teledentistry as a branch of telemedicine that offers a promising solution to improve access to dental care.

A visit may use video, photos or shared x-rays. The dentist may talk with a patient at home, or with another clinician. Rules differ by state, including licensing, consent and what care may be given remotely.

Remote visits create health records and privacy duties under HIPAA. Check the platform's security terms and any business associate agreement. Teledentistry does not replace an in-person exam for every need.
