Practice management

Treatment coordinator

A treatment coordinator is a team member who helps patients understand treatment plans, fees and financing options and helps them schedule the care the dentist recommended.

The title varies from office to office. In its guidance on accepted treatment, the ADA names a documenter, described as a financial coordinator, treatment coordinator or business assistant, who should go over the financial details with the patient in private once the patient agrees to treatment. The ADA notes that this talk should not take place in the dental chair because it is often a stressful situation, and that some states have rules about the privacy of financial discussions. The role connects the case presentation, the treatment plan and options for patient financing. Training and exact duties are set by the practice.
