Dental benefits
Dental benefits are the coverage a plan provides for dental services, including what it pays, what the patient pays and what is limited or excluded.
Dental benefits describe what a plan will pay for. They often include covered services, a yearly maximum, deductibles, coinsurance and waiting periods. HealthCare.gov defines the allowed amount as the maximum amount a plan will pay for a covered health care service.
Benefits differ by plan, so two patients with the same dentist can owe different amounts. Offices check them before care. See insurance verification.
Benefits are not the same as treatment need. A plan may deny a service the dentist thinks is right, and the patient and dentist decide next steps. The patient's explanation of benefits shows what the plan paid.
