Employee handbook
A written guide to a practice's policies and expectations for staff, covering topics such as hours, conduct, safety and benefits, so that every team member knows the rules.
An employee handbook puts a practice's rules, benefits and expectations in writing. The EEOC says that developing and distributing clear employee policies, updating them as needed, and enforcing them consistently may help employees understand and follow the rules, may help prevent problems that lead to discrimination complaints, and may limit liability.
Topics often include hours, time off, conduct, safety, harassment and complaint steps. A handbook works with each job description and with the steps of onboarding.
The EEOC also notes that small businesses may prevent discrimination without formal written policies, so a handbook is a choice, not a requirement in every case. Employment law differs by state, so an attorney should review one. This entry is general information.
