Practice management

Practice culture

Practice culture is the shared values, habits and expectations that shape how a dental team works together and treats patients, whether or not they are written down.

AHRQ describes patient safety culture as the values, beliefs and norms shared by healthcare practitioners and other staff throughout an organization that influence their actions and behaviors. Practice culture is the wider idea. It shows in how the team handles mistakes, talks to patients and supports each other. AHRQ notes that culture can be measured by determining which values, beliefs, norms and behaviors are rewarded, supported, expected and accepted. Tools that shape it include the daily huddle, the team meeting and written standard operating procedures. Leaders set the tone by how they act when pressure is high.
