Primary implant stability
Primary implant stability is how firmly an implant sits in the bone at the moment it is placed, before the bone heals around it.
Primary stability is the mechanical grip of the implant right after placement. A 2026 paper says accurate assessment of primary stability is essential for predicting osseointegration and determining loading protocols.
Primary stability depends on the bone, the implant and the surgical method used. The care team may check it during surgery to decide on next steps. Results differ from patient to patient, and the treating dentist makes these calls.
This early grip is later replaced by the biologic bond described under osseointegration. Primary stability also decides whether a temporary tooth can be placed at once. See immediate provisionalization.
