Osseointegration
Osseointegration is the direct contact between living bone and the surface of a dental implant, which holds the implant firmly in the jaw.
A 2025 paper defines osseointegration as the direct contact between living bone and a dental implant. It adds that electron microscope studies have shown a direct connection between bone and titanium.
This bond is what lets an implant hold a tooth. Surface design and bone quality can affect it.
The starting grip of the implant matters in the first days. See primary implant stability. Poor healing can lead to implant failure, which the FDA lists as a risk of a dental implant.
