Credentials and education

CE credit

A CE credit is a unit of continuing education, usually one hour of approved learning, that a dentist counts toward license renewal or toward an award such as an AGD Fellowship.

A CE credit is the unit used to count continuing education. Credits are counted in hours. State boards add up these credits for license renewal. Missouri law, for example, asks for fifty hours of continuing education in the two-year period before renewal.

Credits also count toward awards. The Academy of General Dentistry says its Fellowship needs 500 hours of approved CE credits, with at least 350 hours earned in live course attendance.

Not all hours count the same way for every purpose. A state board or award program may limit online hours or require approved providers, such as those reviewed through PACE. Read the rules of the body you answer to before you register for a course.
