Mentorship

A longer relationship in which a more experienced person gives voluntary guidance to a less experienced one to support career choices and professional growth over time.

Mentorship is guidance from a more experienced person to a less experienced one. A research article defines it as voluntary formal or informal guidance provided by a more seasoned person, the mentor, to a less established person, the mentee, to facilitate the mentee's career choices and professional development.

In dentistry, mentors may be senior dentists, study club peers or society members. Societies and study groups may offer mentoring programs. Mentorship is a longer relationship than coaching, which often targets a specific skill or goal.

The article comes from the life sciences literature, not from dental policy. Informal and formal mentoring both exist. This entry gives a general definition.
