Feedback

Specific information about performance, compared with a standard and given to the person with the aim of helping them improve, as defined in health professions education.

Feedback is information about how someone is doing. A review in health professions education defines feedback as specific information about the comparison between trainees' observed performance and a standard, given with the intent to improve the trainees' performance.

In a dental office it can come from a dentist to an assistant, from a lead to a new hire, or between peers. It helps most when it is specific, timely and tied to a clear standard such as a job description. It supports coaching and each performance review.

The definition above comes from education research. Offices use the word more broadly. This entry gives a general definition only.
