Missouri dental CE requirements and CE broker explained

Missouri law requires a dentist to show 50 hours of continuing education from the two years before renewal. The Missouri Dental Board now uses CE Broker as its official CE system, and licensees report CE there before the license expires or during renewal. A basic account costs nothing.

Missouri dentists ask two questions at renewal time: how many hours are required, and where are they reported? This post answers both using the Missouri Revisor of Statutes, the Missouri Dental Board and the Missouri Dental Association (MDA), all opened on October 26, 2026. It is general information. The Board decides what counts, so confirm details with the Board.

How many CE hours does a Missouri dentist need?

A Missouri dentist needs 50 hours of continuing education for each two-year renewal. RSMo 332.181 says each dentist must submit satisfactory evidence of 50 hours completed in the two years before the renewal period. It also says dentists must keep documentation as the rules require.

The MDA adds that the rule sets 30 hours for dental hygienists. It also says the Board may waive or extend the time for reasons such as health, military service, foreign residency or other good cause. Requests must be in writing and filed before the renewal date.

What is CE Broker and why does Missouri use it?

CE Broker is the Missouri Dental Board’s official continuing education management system. The Board’s page cites rule 20 CSR 2110-2.071(4). It says licensees must report CE documentation to the system before the license expires or during renewal.

The MDA explains the reason. Before MOPRO, the state’s new licensing system, the Board could not collect CE copies at renewal. It relied on dentists attesting to their CE credit and on later audits. The MDA says audits reached only a small share of licensees, usually around 5 percent. With MOPRO, boards gained the ability to check CE at renewal.

The MDA stresses that CE Broker is the Board’s choice, not the MDA’s. The MDA says it had no role in selecting the product.

How do you set up a CE Broker account?

The Board and the MDA give the same steps.

  1. Go to the CE Broker plans page.
  2. Choose a plan.
  3. Enter your license number.
  4. Start tracking CE.

The Basic Account costs nothing. The MDA lists what an account offers.

CE Broker feature What the MDA says it does
Digital tracking Shows your course history and compliance status
Course search Helps you find courses to meet missing requirements
Easy reporting Most providers report completions for you; you can upload proof for any gaps
Support A help center plus email and chat support on weekdays

Note the limits. The MDA says that a provider reporting to CE Broker is an arrangement between the provider and CE Broker. It quotes a Board reply on AGD records: there is no direct integration between the AGD and the Board. Licensees should check with each provider and upload documents if the provider does not report.

What dates apply to this renewal?

The MDA page says CE Broker was put in place for the current renewal period, with a deadline in November 2026. It also says MDA event credits from the current reporting period are in the ADA Member Portal. The MDA text gives that reporting period as 11/30/24 to 12/01/26, while it quotes the rule as running in two-year blocks that start December 1. Check exact dates with the Board.

What should a study club or CE host do?

Hosts and clubs touch CE records, so a short checklist helps. The questions below are planning prompts, not legal advice.

Question for the host Why it matters
Does the provider report to CE Broker? Many large providers do, but each arrangement is separate
Who issues a completion certificate? Attendees may need to upload proof
Is the course approved for the credit type needed? The Board decides what counts
Can attendees get records quickly? Renewal deadlines leave little time

The guide to dental study clubs covers how clubs organize education. The guide on dental continuing education explains CE formats and tracking more broadly. Dentists who track credits with the Academy of General Dentistry should check how those credits reach CE Broker, since the Board reply says the two have no direct integration.

What are the key numbers at a glance?

Item What the sources say
Dentist CE hours 50 hours per two-year renewal (RSMo 332.181)
Dental hygienist CE hours 30 hours, per the MDA’s reading of the rule
Reporting system CE Broker, the Board’s official system
Basic CE Broker account No cost
Board phone 573-751-0040

What happens if CE is missing?

RSMo 332.181 says that failing to obtain the hours, submit satisfactory evidence or maintain documentation is a violation of section 332.321. A dentist who misses a renewal date may apply to renew within four years of the expiration date. The statute then requires evidence of at least 50 hours for each renewal period the license was expired, and those hours must come from the four years before renewal. After four years, the license is void and the dentist may apply for a new license.

These are statute summaries, not advice. A dentist with a missed deadline should contact the Missouri Dental Board right away and, if needed, an attorney.

Who do you call with questions?

Call the Missouri Dental Board at 573-751-0040. The Board’s staff handle CE Broker questions for licensees, and the MDA says the Board has given staff more system access and training to help.
