Practice management

Dental practice consultant

A dental practice consultant is an outside advisor who reviews how a practice runs, such as its marketing, systems or finances, and gives the owner findings to act on.

A dental practice consultant works from outside the practice. The ADA notes that some practices prefer to partner with consultants rather than do everything alone, and it uses marketing consultants as an example. Consultants may look at one area, such as marketing, or at the whole business. A review often starts with a practice assessment and a look at key performance indicators. The owner stays responsible for the decisions. Owners who hire help should write down the scope of work, the products they will receive and how the work will be measured. Legal, tax and lending questions belong with an attorney, a CPA or a lender, not with a general consultant.
